Brand Discounts

Having the right equipment for an adventure makes for a safer and less stressful trip. That being said, travelling can be expensive and the small costs soon add up. Luckily for you, I have worked hard to get discounts for my followers on my favourite outdoor and travel brands, so have a browse and take full advantage of them. The more you save here, the more you can spend on having fun!

All brand discounts are shown clearly below. I have included a couple of my favourite brands that, unfortunately, don’t give me a discount which I can pass on to you, but which are so good they are worth a mention anyway.

Below are my exclusive discount codes for my favourite travel and outdoor brands. Have a browse and enjoy!

Travel Insurance

SafetyWing

Travel Insurance

Discount: Not avaliable

Available Worldwide!

SafetyWing is my go-to travel insurance. It’s flexible, well-priced and caters to backpackers, digital nomads and travellers of every kind!

Here’s why I’m SafetyWing’s cheerleader:

Longer-trips
Most travel insurance is designed for holiday makers and doesn’t cover you for longer trips. SafetyWing works on a subscription model and you can set it up to travel for as long as you like! Few providers let you travel for more than 12 months and even fewer for more than 24 months. This makes it ideal for backpackers and digital nomads.

Flexibility
You can also take out a policy while you’re abroad! Most providers don’t allow this and require you to take out travel insurance before you start your trip and depart your home country. Presumably because they don’t trust you not to take out insurance the day you break your leg to then claim for it, which is a massive pain in the ass for several reasons:

  • What if you decided to extend your trip while you’re travelling? That’s a big no-no for many but with SafetyWing, you can easily extend your trip and add extra cover (such as extreme sports) during a trip, as it works on a subscription model.

  • Sometimes you may go through phases in your travels where you don’t need travel insurance. I have undertaken working holidays (see my travel tips for more info.) in Australia and Canada, where, for the most part, I didn’t need travel insurance as I was covered there. After leaving Australia, I went to travel Asia and when in Canada, I travelled directly to Latin America. I don’t know about you guys but I definitely didn’t fancy taking a flight from Australia to the UK and back again just to activate travel insurance which I would (hopefully) never use. This is a huge win for SafetyWing.

  • You can return home during a trip, which saves life admin. Last I checked, it allows for 30 days in your home country every 3 months, so for those wanting to nip in and out of home to see family and friends, this is a nice perk.

Cost
I find SafetyWing the best value travel insurance provider for me. You can get an idea of costs using SafetyWing’s widget below.

eSIMS

Airalo

eSIMs

Discount: Coming soon

Discount Code: Coming soon

Available Worldwide

I’ve used Airalo loads when travelling. You can buy an eSIM just before you go to a country to get data as soon as you land. This takes a lot of stress out of travelling and saves you time, so you don’t have to run around local neighbourhoods looking for SIM cards to get set up. I also find it nice that I can book an Uber to my hostel when I land at the airport. eSIMs do often cost more than getting a local SIM card, but if you want convenience or aren’t spending long in a country, then they’re the best option. If you are in a country for several months, then you may want to see how much hassle is involved in getting a local SIM. I find that the more I travel, the more I am using eSIMs for their convenience, and I typically buy them when I am killing time in an airport before I board my flight.

Backacks

Osprey

Backpacks

Discount: Not Available

Osprey are the Rolls-Royce or creme-de-la-creme of backpacks, as it were. They come in a variety of sizes and they are really comfy. They are good quality and therefore more expensive than other brands but you can feel the difference.

My recommendation is to get one with a rain cover and to avoid ones which unzip on the front (suitcase-style). The reason I say the latter is because I got one like that and I never used it as packing cubes accessed from the top are easy to use and quicker to access in my opinion. It didn’t happen to me but it’s one more thing to go wrong if your front-zip breaks and that’s not what you need mid-trip!

Be sure to adjust your backpack too so that it’s comfy and won’t cause you any aches or pains. Also consider putting an AirTag or other tracker in it as well as a note with your contact details, should it get lost. Beware that AirTags make noise when they’re not near your phone, so make sure it’s muffled in something like a pair of socks so that you aren’t driving other people crazy by it going off late at night in a hostel dorm!

Vallon make a range of sunglasses. I have their Glacier glasses (see photo) and I think they’re great! They were a good price, are polarised and with excellent quality visuals and I get loads of compliments on how they look. They have flaps on the sides which stop side glare, making them great for bright environments like on the snow and ice and also in desert environments. Although they are amazing, you shouldn’t wear them when driving, as you don’t have sufficient peripheral vision to make it safe, so you will also need another pair of sunglasses to accompany them. If you plan on doing some adventures in extreme environments, they’re amazing, but if you are doing a more regular holiday, maybe just stick to the one pair of regular sunglasses. Don’t worry though, Vallon do those too (without the side flaps) for everyday use, which I reckon will also be amazing and look stylish too.

They’re a classic, who doesn’t love Ray-Bans! You’ll need some good sunglasses for travelling to protect your eyes (ensure you get some good UV protection) and because, as we all know, sunglasses make you look way cooler (provided you wear them in the daytime). I’m a big fan of their Aviator model.

LifeStraw

Water Filter

Easily one of the best things I have ever bought in my life! Great for hikers and campers, a LifeStraw filters water so that it’s safe to drink. You can drink straight out of a river or use it to filter water into a bittle for later, provided that you have a second squeeable bottle to crush and force the water through.

Water bottles don’t half add some weight and take up space as every hiker will tell you, something I can’t do without when I’m dragging my bones up the side of a cliff already! Now I check a map to make sure there are streams crossing my path and then typically drink from them on my journey and take only one bottle as a backup. I’ve found I’m now drinking way more water on hikes, staying more hydrated and travelling lighter. Plus, there is nothing more primal than lowering your face to a stream and drinking it straight from it as nature intended! If you are considering getting a LifeStraw before travelling, I would say do it! They are hard to find in many countries, so try to get them before you depart.

Although I haven’t used it as much as I would have thought, I took mine around most of the world and it does come in handy. There are other multitools out there but these are the best in my opinion: better quality, smaller, lighter, and more robust. The only problem with them is remembering not to take them in carry-on luggage, or they’ll confiscate it (I had a near miss for this once and have learned my lesson). This means that if you are travelling light with just carry-on, then this isn’t a purchase for you.

GPS Trackers

GPS trackers are not needed for most travellers and backpackers. In many parts of the world, phone signals are great and help often isn’t too far away. If you’re heading off the beaten trail, however, then they can be great. Not only do Garmin GPS trackers let you call for help, but they can also let you check the weather when you have no signal and send messages to family and friends so they know you are ok. If you are taking some risks, then these can save your life!

Of course, this level of tech comes with a price. Garmin offer the best GPS safety devices in my opinion, but they cost to buy, and you also need to pay a monthly subscription, which differs in price depending on what extra features you want (messaging, weather etc.). If price is a concern though, remember two things: you can’t punt a price on safety & there is the bank of mum and dad! I find that family and friends worry about me more than I worry about me. A big positive for getting a track is that your family back home have less stress and peace of mind that you’re ok. So why not ask your parents to pay your monthly subscription or help to buy one in the first place, since it’ll put them at ease too.

I use the Garmin Mini 2 and most people I know with a GPS tracker use the same one. It’s small, lightweight and has a longer battery life than other models, which have a touch screen.

I have written a great (if I say so myself) blog about the pros and cons of GPS trackers and have included a link below.

Most people have heard of GoPros by now. You will often see them on mountain bikers’ helmets, kayaks and everything in between. They are robust, waterproof and can get you footage of places where your phone won’t work or where you definitely won’t want to take it. I think GoPros really come into their own in water and make the money worthwhile. I haven’t used one and I have missed out on great shots of me swimming, snorkelling and diving in all kinds of places with all kinds of animals. The times when people have had a GoPro and sent me their photos (like the one of me and the Manta Ray, which was taken by my tour guide) make for great memories, and I wish I had more of them! Ultimately, it’s up to you; it’s more cost and space so it’s up to you if you think you’ll get the use out of it.

Salomon are my go-to footwear for travelling. They do hiking boots and more trainer-style footwear too, some of which is quite fashionable, so you can easily wear it around towns without looking like you’ve just come off Everest.

If you are not hiking or doing anything crazy, you’ll likely be fine to travel with comfy trainers, but if you are into hiking and adventuring, then I’d definitely consider Salomon hiking boots. I’m onto my third pair of them now and I will keep going back to them. My boots are made with Gore-Tex, meaning that they are both waterproof and breathable. Their main benefit to me though, is how comfortable they are. Unlike many other boots, which need breaking in, I have been able to go for a long hike with new boots and find them comfy from day one! Another thing I love about all the Salomon boots that I have worn is how light they are! They feel crazy light for their size and how much comfort, support, and protection they provide. My legs get heavy enough when hiking up mountains without having heavy boots weighing them down further, so this is a great plus for me.

The only negative of Salmon are that their warranty isn’t worth the paper it’s written on (when it comes to footwear at least). I had some boots which I had trashed (to be fair, they had been around the world with across New Zealand and half of Asia) and they didn’t wear out on the soles but instead started degrading around some stitches. I contacted Salomon as they have a two-year warranty; the fact that I’d worn them every day for nearly two years was irrelevant, and they refused to replace them. Don’t get me wrong, I had my money’s worth out of them but why make a warranty if you don’t stick to it? Like I say though, I used those boots a lot and they were only designed for day use too, but it did annoy me as a matter of principle. That being said I still keep buying more of them, so what does that tell you!

At present, as I do a lot of hiking, scrambling and off-the-track adventures, I have settled on the Quest 4 as my go-to boot. They are robust enough to take a good beating and offer great ankle support and protection. I don’t recommend this as it’s not what they’re designed for, but I have worn these boots when motorbiking too and have fallen off while wearing them (on more occasions than I would like to admit) and they have done a great job of protecting my ankles. Like I say though, they’re a great hiking boot. Check out my blog and Destination Guides and you’ll see me wearing them in pretty much every adventurous photo I’m in! Be sure to pair them with Merino socks too; more on that below.

I’m a massive merino fan! For those who haven’t heard of it merino is a type of wool from a Merino sheep. You find lots of it comes from New Zealand, although there is some in Canada and elsewhere too. It’s a natural wonder material! I got convinced to buy Merino socks to hike in first and I’ve never looked back. I now use Merino for many of my T-shirts and thermals.

Merino is lightweight, comfortable, breathable and prevents odours. I know what you’re thinking, it sounds too good to be true, and it does! But in this case, it really is that good. Get a couple of pairs of merino socks for hiking to start (so you can rotate them) and then wash them in tepid water and let them air dry. Merino clothes are incredibly comfy and I wear my merino T-shirts loads, especially when I’m relaxing in the evening. Have a browse of Unbound Merino and grab yourself a T-shirt and you’ll soon find out for yourself!

Outdoor Research, with their ‘OR’ logo is a great outdoor clothing brand. I love their products, with my favourite being my sun hoodie. I would definitely recommend getting at least one of these before you travel. They’re thin and breathable so they keep you cool when you are exercising but also they keep the wind from biting your skin when a cold breeze rolls in. The hood comes up to protect you from the sun, combine that with a peaked cap and you’re golden! Protected from the sun and without the need for loads of sticky suncream (which isn’t nice when hiking at the best of times). I also love the fit and style and wear mine all the time.

Mountain Warehouse is one of the best value places Find clothing for your travels. Outdoor clothes are often really expensive but not at Mountain Warehouse! I love my Jetboil! I have a Jetboil MiniMo and it is a Godsend. There are cheaper options out there for camping equipment, but Jetboils are worth the extra money. If you are car camping, then you can go for something larger and cheaper but if you are doing any multi-day camping trips without a car, especially if you are carrying everything in a backpack, then a Jetboil is the way to go in my opinion.

Jetboils are lightweight and compact. They are also extremely efficient, so you don’t need ot take as much fuel with you, saving you space and reducing your weight. They boil water incredibly quickly, which is the best thing in the world after a big day of adventures when you crash out at camp and want nothing more than a cuppa and some grub.

Many people use the classic model, which is taller and slimmer than my MiniMo and for that reason, arguably easier to pack into a backpack. That’s a good choice if you go on lots of solo trips; however, for me, I have no regrets getting the MiniMo, it has plenty of space for food and larger meals and its wider design means I can eat directly from it more easily. I typically eat a rat-pack (dehydrated camping meal) to myself in the evening and bulk it out further with rice (I eat a lot) and this gives me the space to do it. Many people will find that there is enough space in the MiniMo to cook for two which gives you more options too if you are camping with company.

MSR make great outdoor gear like camping stoves, trekking poles and now shoes. What they are best known for, and the reason why I love them so much, is their amazing tents!

I have a one-man MSR tent, which I have used in Hawaii and Canada. It’s easy to assemble, packs up neatly and is lightweight. It suits me perfectly and I’ve taken it on plenty of backcountry hikes. It’s been through wind, rain and snow and has held up perfectly. I’ve slept in loads of tents before this one but with my MSR tent, I really notice the extra quality in its design and can’t recommend them enough.
